Nanoparticle’s Pivotal Role in Ultra High Barrier Films for Flexible Electronics, Food and Medical Packaging Applications

Tera-Barrier Films has developed a robust barrier technology with a portfolio of 96 patents for flexible displays, flexible plastic electronics, Food and Medical packaging applications. Tera-Barrier Films has developed an innovative approach to resolving the “pore effect” by literally plugging the defects in barrier oxide layers using nanoparticles in the “Nano Sealing Layer”. Therefore, the barrier properties of single oxide barrier layer is increased up to 10,000 times when a single “Nano Sealing Layer” is coated on to the sputtered barrier oxide layer. The breakthrough results of this development have shown barrier properties less than 10-6g/m2.day (WVTR) and very high lag time of up to 2000 hours. Furthermore, the single “Nano Sealing Layer” has shown barrier performance with up to 20 times higher barrier properties compared to conventional transparent barrier oxide layers or multilayers used in food and medical packaging. This “Nano Sealing Layer” would be one of the best alternatives for aluminum barriers used in food and medical applications. The barrier properties, mechanical properties and flexibility results were reported.
