Flow Features and Operability Windows in Slot Coating Processes

Slot coating process as one of pre-metered coating processes has been widely applied in industries manufacturing secondary batteries, displays films, high functionality films, adhesive tapes, and so on. We will shortly introduce recent results on flow dynamics in coating bead region featured by Couette-Poiseuille (C-P) flows and operability windows in various slot coating systems including Newtonian, viscoelastic, and particulate suspension coating liquids. Simplified models for predicting the operability window have been developed, exhibiting the good agreement with higher-dimensional models and experiments for single and dual-layer slot coatings. Also, particle migration and segregation under non-symmetric flow conditions have been quantitatively compared from the diffusive flux model and Lattice-Boltzmann method.
